Sexual Assault Study Offers Disturbing Results

Heather Hlavka, an assistant professor of social and cultural sciences, at Marquette University did a 10 year study entitled “Normalizing Sexual Violence” and got results from a sample population drawn from a forensic child advocacy center in the Midwest. “The sample population investigated occurrences of sexual assault on school buses, playgrounds, hallways and generally within school peer groups.”

She used what she called traditional sexual scripts to talk about gender. She field those traditional scripts created double standard.

The study revealed several disturbing results. For example and found girls criticize one another for not avoiding aggressive male behavior and downplay sexual assault to each other as “no big deal” in order to prevent victims from reporting it.

“They grab you, touch your butt and try to, like, touch you in the front, and run away, but it’s okay,” said one 13-year-old girl interviewed in the study. ”I mean … I never think it’s a big thing because they do it to everyone.”

The study was done originally in the hopes of trying to get some explanation of why so few sexual assaults of females on college campuses are ever reported. It has been estimated that as few as 10% of these assaults are ever reported. The study would seem to indicate that many young women view sexual assault as no big deal which might explain the lack of reporting.

Campus Assaults Getting Attention

Here’s a story out of Kansas City Missouri about College Sexual Assaults in general and some specifics on how the University of Missouri is handling them.

After years of neglect the subject of sexual assaults on college campuses is finally gaining more scrutiny both on local campuses and in Washington.

The article points out that too many young women for a variety of reasons do not report rapes and sexual assaults. One of the reasons is that in close to 90% of all sexual assaults on a campus the perpetrator is known to the victim. That’s because more than likely they are classmates or live in the same dorm, which in part explains why so few of them are reported. Peer pressure dictates that these crimes not be reported because not only can they jeopardize the college career, but a felony assault on your record can last a lifetime. It affects all facets of your life.

“University of Missouri system officials, led by President Tim Wolfe, must keep their recent pledges that they will improve the reports and responses to sexual assaults on their four campuses. That should include efforts to make the University of Missouri-Kansas City safer for students.”

U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill is pushing for action in Washington DC. She sent a survey to 350 colleges and universities to find out how they report and investigate these assaults to better understand what works and what doesn’t work before proposing needed fixes

One thing is clear we need a national effort by colleges to offer swift and effective help to victims, and tough punishment for criminals involved in the assaults.

Meanwhile we recommend that all women on campus carry a nonlethal self-defense product with them, one that can incapacitate an assailant for as long as 45 minutes.

Domestic Violence Victim’s Options

Here’s a story about domestic violence and the options available to victims. You can read the whole story HERE.

Specifically it talks about a case where of violent domestic abuse offender shot his wife and her parents at their house during an incident recently.

Did you know that 30% of all the people killed in the United States were killed by a domestic partner? The fact is that three women every day are killed by a domestic partner in United States. As many as 30 to 35% of all women in the United States who are married suffer some form of intimate partner violence.

In this particular case there was a restraining order but there is more to it than just getting a piece of paper. People who go to the trouble of getting a restraining order need to let as many people know about it as possible; neighbors, friends and even fellow employees.

“The laws are pretty strong in terms of once that violence protective order is entered. It is sent out to law enforcement. It’s entered into a national database, any violations of that protective order are grounds for immediate arrest. Often the challenge is for the victim to have a path to safety and the domestic violence protective order is a really important piece to that but they often also need resources in finding a new place to live and things like that.”

Women who are in a relationship that has a domestic violence component should seriously consider getting a nonlethal self-defense product.

Sexual Assaults Cause Personality Change

This is a story about a senior at New Hanover high school who was doing her senior project on Sexual Assault and domestic violence-pretty heavy topics for a senior in high school. She chose that topic because her classmates are heading off to college and lives of greater independence, so they need to be aware of the threat of sexual assault and how they can minimize it. Coincidentally April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

“A 2011 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that one in five of women said they had been raped or had experienced an attempted rape, The New York Times reported. One in four said they’d been beaten by an intimate partner, and one in six women had been stalked.

Results include loss in trust and confidence and a complete personality change,” she wrote. Other effects might include self-harm, depression, disease, flashbacks, disorders, substance abuse and stress.”

She arranged for several guest speakers to make a presentation on the subject at the high school and was severely disappointed when only 30 to 35 students showed up.

According to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), 73 percent of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim.

The best way for women to defend themselves against any kind of an assault is with a self-defense product. We particularly recommend pepper sprays that are on keychains because they are more likely to be with you wherever you go. But there is a new product out that is a powerful stun device that comes with a keychain attachment.

Title IX Role In Campus Assaults

Here’s a story about the role Title IX plays in dealing with Campus Sexual Assaults. The story goes on to say that sexual assault rates on college campuses vary across the country but almost all of them are troubling. The 2014 White House study reported that one in five women has been sexually assaulted while in college. We should note that many other studies report that the number is actually much higher because so many of the women who are assaulted do not report the crime.

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights issued a “Dear Colleague Letter” that changed the way sexual assaults in schools are investigated, the awareness of sexual harassment and sex crimes on college campuses has risen significantly.

According to the letter, all institutions needed to change their procedure in resolving complaints of sexual discrimination from a “clear and convincing” standard to the “preponderance of evidence” standard in order to be Title IX compliant.

Pres. Obama said on this matter “These young women worked so hard just to get into college, often their parents are doing everything they can to help them pay for it. So when they finally make it there only to be assaulted, that is not just a nightmare for them and their families, it’s an affront to everything they’ve worked so hard to achieve. It’s totally unacceptable.”

Passed in 1972, Title IX is a frequently misunderstood piece of legislature most commonly associated with athletics. Title IX’s actual purpose is to ensure gender equality by protecting the rights of women and men in all schools that receive public funding in all areas, not just athletics.

The beginning of the statute states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Close to 20-25 % of all women on a college campus will be sexually assaulted in her four years at a University. One of the best ways that women can defend themselves from sexual assault is to always carry a self-defense product with them such as a stun gun or a pepper spray.

President Carter’s Thoughts On College Sexual Assault

This is an article about College Sexual Assault. Former President Jimmy Carter wants people to recognize that abuse against women not only happens in the third world, but it happens in the United States as well.

He called the abuses against women and girls around the world the “most horrible” human rights violation happening today, and turned his attention toward problems dealing with sexual assaults at college and in the military.

“For instance two of the most, I guess, revered institutions in America would be the university system, which is superb, and also our military,” Carter said. “And sexual abuse, sexual assaults take place more on university campuses than anywhere else in America.”

According to Carter, it’s a problem that often goes unaddressed by university administrators.

A small percentage of men are responsible for an inordinate percentage of sexual assaults in colleges, and undetected rapists frequently reoffend.

How To Defend Yourself

Women need to take things into their own hands starting with learning self-defense techniques and ending with a self-defense product such as a pepper spray or stun gun. A pepper spray or stun gun can disable any assailant for as long as 45 minutes.

As we have said before, “when the words no or stop don’t seem to work a blast from a pepper spray or volts from a stun gun may be the answer.”

Domestic Violence-Encourage Community Involvement

This is an article that was written recently encourage community involvement in Domestic Violence Response.

The author makes the point that domestic violence has been below the radar. For many decades it was considered to be a domestic matter to be handled by the family. Fortunately times and attitudes of changed. Domestic violence has always been a crime in every state with laws designed to protect the victims, but the law doesn’t always protect the victims. The author goes on to say that in Daytona Beach where he lives they average about 20 domestic violence reports a week.

The local police department has adapted “a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to tracking down these offenders, and we make arrests in approximately 75 percent of these cases.”

Research has shown that this strategy is have a positive effect on repeat offenses for this crime.

One of the best ways that women can defend themselves from domestic abuse assault is to always carry a self-defense product with them such as a stun gun or a pepper spray.

Campus Sexual Assault Protection

Here is an article about what a Dartmouth group is doing to provide protection to female students against Campus Sexual Assaults.

The group claims that Dartmouth does not do enough to protect students. A student was sexually assaulted after her name was posted to an online “rape guide.”

Dartmouth has found itself in the middle of controversy over handling campus rape cases.

“Student groups have asked the school to list expulsion as the punishment for rape in the student handbook and to block campus internet access to the website where the “rape guide” was posted. But school authorities haven’t taken any of these recommendations seriously.

“The crisis of sexual assaults on campus must be stopped. Take student recommendations seriously and expel rapists, list rape as a punishable offense and expulsion as the preferred punishment in the student handbook, and block access to the ‘rape guide’ on campus.”

Dartmouth claims that they investigate every instance of sexual assault reported to the University and offer multiple levels of support and resources to every survivor. A say in this particular case no report of sexual assault had been made.

According to every national study that we have seen nearly one in four female students on a college campus will be sexually assaulted in her time at the University. The assailants are known to the victims and close to 90% of cases and alcohol or drugs is involved in close to 70% of the cases. There is a classic case of under reporting for these crimes with only 10% of them estimated to be ever reported.

South Carolina Latest For Hidden Cameras In Long Term Care Facilities

This is a story out of South Carolina, where nursing home residents concerned about their safety or who would prefer that they be electronically monitored by loved ones from afar may soon have that option.

You can read the whole story HERE.

The South Carolina legislature is considering a bill that would allow residents of nursing homes or long-term care facilities to place a camera in their rooms and provide for penalties for employees of the facility tamper with it.

Other states notably Oklahoma, Ohio and Texas have already passed laws that allow for hidden cameras in patients’ rooms.

“It really puts a lot of power in their hands to be able to have oversight of their care in a way that family can be involved without being there. The patient can interact where it’s positioned and what it’s going to capture.”

Original privacy concerns have been addressed by requiring the resident to post a notice that the room is being monitored.

The bill has been changed since its introduction to address privacy concerns. For example, it would require a resident or the family to post a notice informing those about to enter the room that it is being monitored.

Several groups have expressed concern about this initiative and are creating considerable pushback.

If you have a situation where a parent is being abused, a hidden spy camera is the best way to catch that on video and document it for legal purposes, it may be the only way that you can prove your case.
