Job Scams And ID Theft-Safety Tip Of the Week

Reprint of
“Job Search Scams: 6 Ways to Protect Yourself Against Identity Theft

As U.S. unemployment has increased, so too has the number of job search scams identity theft rings are perpetrating against desperate job seekers.

Two types of job search scams are most common. One is a phishing scam, where identity theft perpetrators e-mail would-be victims to tell them about potential jobs and opportunities to make extra money. The e-mails direct recipients to websites that identity thieves have created specifically for gathering personal information, just as if it were a job application, says Oaks.

These fake applications request all the information job seekers would expect to provide, such as their name, address and phone number, as well as for information they may not expect to offer so early in the process, she adds, such as their Social Security number, permission to conduct a background check and bank account information.

“They tell you they need your bank account information so they can make sure your check can be direct deposited,” she says, adding that they’ll sometimes go so far as to say that they’ll place money in your account and then remove it just to make sure it works.

“By allowing them to place money in your account and remove it, you let your bank know that this ‘employer’ can take money out of your account, and that’s how they wipe out people’s bank accounts.” Never mind the fact that you’ll never receive any information about any job from one of these e-mails.

In the second scam, identity thieves pose as employers on legitimate job search sites. They post a generic job that would appeal to a large number of people, Oaks says, and in the course of talking to applicants, they ask for personal information.

“There are identity thieves all over valid and existing job search websites who are posing as employers,”

Advice to job seekers is simple: Be wary of the information you’re sharing and at which point in the hiring process you’re sharing it.

Here are six specific tips:

1. Never share your bank account information up front.
2. Never share your Social Security number up front.
3. Never agree to a background check up front.
4. Research potential employers.
5. Consider sharing less information on your resume.
6. Opt out. When you sign up for e-mail newsletters and offers from legitimate businesses, opt out of
receiving offers from their third-party business partners.”

Vacation Safety Tips-Safety Tip Of The Week

Many people are so happy to go on vacation that they forget some basic safety tips for their home before they go.

When your home is left empty it is the most vulnerable. And if you don’t think that burglars aren’t constantly looking for homes that are vulnerable you better think again.

So here are some tips that will help make sure that your belongings are where they’re supposed to be when you get back.

1. Make sure you stop your mail and newspapers so they don’t accumulate in your front yard or in your mailbox. A pile of papers in your front yard is a sure sign you’re gone.

2. Have someone mow your lawn and water your lawn and plants while you’re gone.

3. If you don’t have a timer for some of your indoor lights ask a neighbor to turn on lights every night for a few hours. The Programmable Timer will do it for you and randomly turn lights on and off.

4. And make sure you tell your neighbors that you will be gone and when you’ll be back. It doesn’t hurt to ask them to keep an eye on your house.

Get A Barking Guard Dog-Safety Tip Of The Week

click for more info

Well, okay I know not all of you will go out and get a guard dog or even a dog that barks. It just isn’t going to happen. But the fact of the matter is that the sound of a barking dog is one of the best deterrents against home burglary or home invasion for that matter. If you don’t believe me just call your local police station and ask them.

They will tell you, without qualification, that the sound of a barking dog is the best deterrent against home burglary.

Home burglary happens in one out of six homes every year. Home burglary happens every 15 seconds. Do you really want to take your chances? Or do you want to be proactive and do something to protect your home?

Now the dilemma! You want to do something but don’t like dogs. And you’re not getting get one! I can relate to that.

How about getting one of the most effective home security products on the market-THE ELECTRONIC WATCHDOG?

Sometimes it is called the Barking Dog Alarm. When it is plugged in it protects an area in a one hundred degree triangle up to as much as 20 feet away. The electronic radar wave sense control “sees” through wood, cement, brick and glass. If an intruder enters that area the sound of an angry barking dog starts. The volume and radar sensitivity are both adjustable. It can be used in commercial applications too.

There is a remote control that allows you to arm or disarm the system as well as set off a panic alarm.

So get a barking dog-better yet, get the bark without the dog.

Neighborhood Watch-Safety Tip Of The Week

For close to a year now we have been giving our readers a safety tip of the week. The majority of the tips have been on self defense, self defense products, home security, home security products and business security.

The safety tips have not been limited to those topics. We have given you tips on how to deal with scams we hear about, identity theft and much more. Most of the tips we will be giving you will cost you little or no money to implement. Can you say FREE?

The reason we are doing this is quite simple. We here at The Home Security SuperStore care about your personal safety and security and that of your loved ones.

This week’s tip is about the Neighborhood Watch Program which was established in 1972. In neighborhoods where it has been established homeowners experience less crime than their non-watch neighbors.

With one out of six homes annually a victim of home burglary the Neighborhood Watch Program brings a higher level of security to your neighborhood. It is a simple program that works.

As a block captain you learn much more than just about home security. Here they offer classes on many security related topics.

You can learn more about it by contacting your local Sherriff’s Department who runs and sets up the program or by visiting Neighborhood Watch Program. It is FREE and it works.

Identity Theft & Electronic Pickpockets-Safety Tip Of The Week

click for more details

Nearly everyone has heard of identity theft and knows what it is. It is a multi-billion-dollar problem in the U.S. and a very real threat to your credit life. But I’ve never heard the term “electronic pickpocket” before. When I signed up for training for our neighborhood watch group I got on a mailing list through that group.

They have come up with all kinds of really good tips for consumers. Of course their main emphasis is home security but through the police department they have classes on personal security, self-defense and many other topics. I cannot speak highly enough of what a valuable resource a Neighborhood Watch Group can be.

Anyhow, back on topic. This video shows you how easy it is for someone to get your credit card information right out of your pocket. It’s a very scary thought and one that’s worth watching so you can take some preventative steps like protecting your credit cards with a ID Theft Proof Wallet

You don’t want to be a victim of identity theft!

Please watch this Video on ID theft.

Vehicle Safety “Checklist”-Safety Tip Of The Week

click for more details

A few weeks ago on the safety tip blog posting, I asked if anybody had some suggestions. I got a reply from Mark LeClair. Mark is a disabled Veteran after serving over 15 years in the Navy. Parachuting accidents shortened a very loved career in Naval Special Warfare.

Mark trains the Army full time on all firearms and systems on a weapons simulator and has trained over 78,000 soldiers (and others listed) in 6 years. His company is called “Smart Tactics”

He and his employees provide personal protection courses, custom courses, firearm lessons, advanced tactics and NRA Instructor certifications.

He offered us this “vehicle checklist” for personal safety courses that he teaches
:
“-Approach vehicle with door key in non-dominant hand

-Be aware of anyone loitering around your area

-Be watchful of anyone parked next to your car and still inside

-Enter through passenger side if nervous about someone parked next to your car and still inside

-Check the backseat

-Enter vehicle

-Close door and immediately lock it

-Start car

-Place in appropriate gear

-Then put on seatbelt

-Then worry about everything else

-Be aware using mirrors and have an escape plan

This has been quite effective and I added a video his website (www.smartweaponstactics.com), which provides a decent visual to those that do not understand how easy it is to be surprised.”

Thanks to Mark for allowing us to use his tips.

Check out his website (www.smartweaponstactics.com) he has some articles that are worth reading and you may even want his services as an instructor.

I would add one tip-carry a self defense utilty product like the Diablo Flashlight Stun Gun

Two Little Known Safety Tips-Safety Tip Of The Week

Here are two little-known tips that are very valuable so I thought I’d share them with you.

A few weeks ago when I was attending a neighborhood watch block Captain training one of the things the instructor asked was how many people had insurance and registration papers in their car? Everyone raised their hand. I was surprised when he said that was a bad idea because if anybody ever broke into your car that would be what they would steal. Then they would have your address and other valuable information that could be used very quickly against you.

He suggested instead that you carry your insurance and car registration on your person in your wallet instead of in your car.

Very few people know this that most crime prevention officers (and every community has them) will do a free evaluation of your home security or even your business security and make suggestions that can improve it. This is something that can be done for free so why not take advantage of it. There may be a wait depending on how busy he is. But it’s well worth it.

Automobile Security & Safety-Safety Tip Of The Week

click for more details

Here are some valuable tips on automobile safety and security.

1. On approaching, entering or exiting your car make sure you lock/unlock your doors first, keep one arm free and look around the car before you get in. Park in well lit areas and make sure you know where your panic buttons are and if possible locate an emergency call box near where you park

2. If you have a breakdown make sure you have your mobile phone with you and a map and know how to get in touch with the local emergency number.

3. If you have to have an emergency stop to get help turn on your emergency flashers, make sure park away from the road, keep your doors locked and windows rolled up and tie some signaling device around your door handle or antenna.

4. If you have an accident stay in your car, partially lower your window. If a police officer approaches and you feel nervous request another officer.

5. Avoid road rage and hitchhikers.

6. Car alarms, kill switches and GPS devices are all effective vehicle theft prevention devices. A good steering wheel lock can help too

7. Carjacking is becoming a big problem as are staged accidents for insurance scams-beware. Don’t leave your car.

8. And it is always a good idea to keep an emergency self defense device in your car like the Diablo Flashlight Stun Gun. It is a powerful flashlight and a 4.5 million volt stun gun.
