Believe it or not walkers and runners are very susceptible to assaults. Think about it. They usually run in relatively remote areas away from congestion and other people and a lot of runners that I know run at what I consider to be weird times-early a.m. or dusk or later.

Home Security Tips-The Real Value Of Neighborhood Watch-Safety Tip Of The Week

Last week I attended some training for the neighborhood watch program where I am block Captain for my building. The lead trainer, who is a volunteer, talked a lot about home security issues in general safety issues affecting the city-namely the shortage of police officers in the current budget crisis.

He pointed out the importance of the neighborhood watch program, especially now with fewer police officers on the payroll. He told us that burglaries for example were up 10% in the city last year and so far this year were up 15%-one of the few areas of crime that’s on the increase.

We talked about some ideas that could be used to help improve your home security. Right at the top of the list were motion activated spotlights and security cameras. Our trainer told us that real security cameras can be expensive and that Fake Security Cameras were a viable alternative.

I found out that the local police department does training classes for both personal security and home security depending on availability of officers. They will even do a home safety audit.

He recommends keeping some Self Defense Products located around the house in case of a home invasion.

Police Cadets Experience Pepper Spray

Police cadets are those young men and women who voluntarily want to be police officers. They undergo extensive training and testing before they graduate some as long as 18 weeks.

In Huntsville, Alabama a class is in their fourth week-the week of pepper spray training. They are subjected to a healthy dose of pepper spray to see what it is like to be sprayed on one hand to see how effective it is but more importantly to learn how to fight thru it should they be accidentally sprayed.

“It’s important for them to know what they’re carrying and experience with it… You might have out in the field, when applying it, over spray in windy conditions. Or you may have another officer spray you, and you may have suspect spray you… You just never know… and you need to know how to fight through it,” said Lt. Darryl Lawson, the Director of Training.

Self Defense-Pepper Spray Tips

Every law enforcement officer in the country carries a pepper spray. It is really his first option after a lawful command is not followed. Since the 1980’s when the FBI authorized the use of pepper spray, civilian usage has gone out of sight. It is a primary nonlethal self defense weapon for female self defense. Pepper spray or OC spray as it is sometimes called is by far the most popular self defense item in the world.

The main ingredient in pepper spray is the resin of one of the hottest peppers in the world-cayenne pepper-oleoresin capsicum (that’s where the OC comes from).

Pepper spray is such a powerful tool that is not legal in all countries. It is legal in all of the 50 United States but some states have restrictions in the amount of oleoresin capsicum that can be used.

Once the resin makes contact with the skin, it swells the mucus membranes of the nose making breathing difficult. It also causes the membranes of the eyes to swell up which makes it difficult to see. There is intense pain associated with pepper sprays along with coughing and choking. Effects are not long-lasting and will go away after about 45 minutes.

I have always maintained that knowing the proper way to use something increases the effectiveness of the product. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your pepper spray.

1. Pepper sprays are on average, close to 90% effective. They are almost always used outdoors and wind conditions can affect the accuracy of your aim. So make sure you take that into account.

2. Always read and follow the directions of a new product you get.

3. The contents of all pepper sprays are pressurized and can explode if left in a car, for example. Always keep them in a cool ventilated place.

4. Pay attention to the expiration date on the bottom of your pepper spray. They are usually good for three years.

5. When using the pepper spray aim for the eyes, but if you hit anywhere on the face that’s okay.

6. And practice using your pepper spray so that you know where the safety is to prevent accidental discharge. Some pepper sprays have grips so that you can hold it in the dark without fear of holding it the wrong way.

7. When you spray an assailant don’t stand around admiring your work. Pepper sprays allow you time to escape a dangerous situation. Go get help or just get away.
