Vacation Safety Tips-Safety Tip Of The Week

click for more info

Many people are so happy to go on vacation that they forget some basic safety tips for their home before they go.

When your home is left empty it is the most vulnerable. And if you don’t think that burglars aren’t constantly looking for homes that are vulnerable you better think again.

So here are some tips that will help make sure that your belongings are where they’re supposed to be when you get back.

1. Make sure you stop your mail and newspapers so they don’t accumulate in your front yard or in your mailbox. A pile of papers in your front yard is a sure sign you’re gone.

2. Have someone mow your lawn and water your lawn and plants while you’re gone.

3. If you don’t have a timer for some of your indoor lights ask a neighbor to turn on lights every night for a few hours. The Programmable Timer will do it for you and randomly turn lights on and off.

4. And make sure you tell your neighbors that you will be gone and when you’ll be back. It doesn’t hurt to ask them to keep an eye on your house.

Neighborhood Watch-Safety Tip Of The Week

For close to a year now we have been giving our readers a safety tip of the week. The majority of the tips have been on self defense, self defense products, home security, home security products and business security.

The safety tips have not been limited to those topics. We have given you tips on how to deal with scams we hear about, identity theft and much more. Most of the tips we will be giving you will cost you little or no money to implement. Can you say FREE?

The reason we are doing this is quite simple. We here at The Home Security SuperStore care about your personal safety and security and that of your loved ones.

This week’s tip is about the Neighborhood Watch Program which was established in 1972. In neighborhoods where it has been established homeowners experience less crime than their non-watch neighbors.

With one out of six homes annually a victim of home burglary the Neighborhood Watch Program brings a higher level of security to your neighborhood. It is a simple program that works.

As a block captain you learn much more than just about home security. Here they offer classes on many security related topics.

You can learn more about it by contacting your local Sherriff’s Department who runs and sets up the program or by visiting Neighborhood Watch Program. It is FREE and it works.

Two Little Known Safety Tips-Safety Tip Of The Week

Here are two little-known tips that are very valuable so I thought I’d share them with you.

A few weeks ago when I was attending a neighborhood watch block Captain training one of the things the instructor asked was how many people had insurance and registration papers in their car? Everyone raised their hand. I was surprised when he said that was a bad idea because if anybody ever broke into your car that would be what they would steal. Then they would have your address and other valuable information that could be used very quickly against you.

He suggested instead that you carry your insurance and car registration on your person in your wallet instead of in your car.

Very few people know this that most crime prevention officers (and every community has them) will do a free evaluation of your home security or even your business security and make suggestions that can improve it. This is something that can be done for free so why not take advantage of it. There may be a wait depending on how busy he is. But it’s well worth it.

Home Security Tips-The Real Value Of Neighborhood Watch-Safety Tip Of The Week

Last week I attended some training for the neighborhood watch program where I am block Captain for my building. The lead trainer, who is a volunteer, talked a lot about home security issues in general safety issues affecting the city-namely the shortage of police officers in the current budget crisis.

He pointed out the importance of the neighborhood watch program, especially now with fewer police officers on the payroll. He told us that burglaries for example were up 10% in the city last year and so far this year were up 15%-one of the few areas of crime that’s on the increase.

We talked about some ideas that could be used to help improve your home security. Right at the top of the list were motion activated spotlights and security cameras. Our trainer told us that real security cameras can be expensive and that Fake Security Cameras were a viable alternative.

I found out that the local police department does training classes for both personal security and home security depending on availability of officers. They will even do a home safety audit.

He recommends keeping some Self Defense Products located around the house in case of a home invasion.

Home Security: Ideas to Protect Your Home-Safety Tip Of The Week

click for more INFO

When you think home security several things work better than others. These practices are endorsed by insurance companies and police departments the country over. Why? Because they work. When it comes to protecting your home from burglary and home invasion why not go with the winners.

Here is a list of the most effective ideas. Some of these may appear to be obvious choices-they are.

Look at your home from the outside. Are there hiding places like trees and shrubs? Are there any obvious faults like open garage doors or open doors and windows? Does it look like an easy target? The bad guys are looking for an easy mark. Make them pick someone else. Put as many obstacles in his way as possible.

Advertising. That’s what I call it when you have things like Fake Surveillance Cameras and motion activated spotlights. Then there are the real signs like “Vicious Guard Dog on Duty” or Neighborhood Watch signs that tell potential burglars to stay away.

Do the obvious. Lock all doors and windows even when you are at home. If you have an alarm make sure it is armed. If you have a peephole use it. Most people reflexively answer the door without looking first. Not a good idea!

Nonlethal weapons In the event of a home invasion having some Pepper Sprays stun guns or even a taser located in different parts of the house can make a huge difference in the outcome of a home invasion.

Practice for a home invasion I know this sounds crazy. But as a family unit if you practice what to do in the event of a home invasion you will be prepared.

If you follow these WINNING IDEAS you will be in a much stronger position to secure your home against a home burglary or home invasion.

General Home Security Tips-Safety Tip Of The Week

Every week we give you some safety tips. We missed on Friday so here, as a bonus, are our safety tips on Saturday.

When it comes to providing general home safety and security ideas law enforcement officials are still the best source of information. Here are some tips that they provide for homeowners for their home security and safety.

1. If you plan to be gone for a long period of time, create an illusion that someone is still there. Leave the TV or stereo on so the noise can be heard or the images cast shadows that can be seen throughout the room. Motion activated spotlights are a good home security tool. A Programmable Light Timer can turn lights on and off at random times creating the same illusion.

2. Make sure all exterior doors have dead bolt locks.

3. When you get an unexpected knock at your door check to see who’s there by using your peephole first before opening it.

4. Don’t leave extra keys under doormats, potted plants or other obvious locations. Burglars are on to that old trick

5. Burglar proof your glass patio doors by putting a metal or wooden bar in the middle bottom track so they can’t be opened.

6. Keep your garage door shut and locked.

7. Keep drapes and blinds shut especially in rooms where there is expensive gear

8. Keep your valuables hidden away in a safe like the locking Book Safe.

9. Don’t leave notes for service people.

10. If you are going to be gone for a few days, adjust ring tone on your file to its lowest volume. An unanswered phone can tip off a burglar that no one’s there.

11. Have a friend or neighbor get your newspaper and mail. Don’t cancel the subscriptions because you never know who can get that information.

Feedback on these posts is encouraged. Have you ever used any of these tips? Please share your experience. We want to hear your thoughts.

Home Security: Burglary-Four Great Ways To Prevent It

It isn’t every day that you get inside information from burglars on home security tips. Recently a burglar who committed just over 70 burglaries got caught. He agreed to share some of his inside information with police in the hopes of protecting homeowners from burglaries. He did his work in England where the penalties for burglary are much more severe than in the United States.

We should note that he did this, not out of the goodness of his heart, but in exchange for a more lenient sentence.

He said that it’s just as easy to get into a house in England as it is anywhere. He never had to break into a house. 90% of all burglaries in the United States occur through unlocked doors and windows.

So here are his top four ways to prevent home burglary from the perspective of a professional burglar.

The first thing was if he saw a pebbled walkway in the front or the back of the house that he avoided that house because it made way too much noise. That’s something that I’ve never heard before but makes perfect sense.

Secondly, he told authorities that if a dog was in the house that he avoided the house at all costs. Even if there was a sign of a dog it was enough to spook him and his fellow burglars. Sometimes you don’t even need a dog. If you’re a homeowner you can get the electronic watchdog, which makes realistic, angry, barking dog sounds when someone approaches a protected area. It’s an inexpensive and less troublesome way of protecting your house than getting a real barking dog.

The third thing that he told police was a showstopper for him were security cameras outside the house. Even if it was Fake Security Cameras no one could really tell the difference. That was enough to make him pick another house.

And a fourth thing he said was an absolute deterrent for him in committing a home burglary were lights. Motion activated spotlights and lights that go on and off randomly inside the house are enough to scare anyone away. They cast shadows and give the impression that someone is at home-an absolute no-no for burglars.

With home burglary on the increase throughout the United States, isn’t it worthwhile to listen to these tips from a professional burglar and follow them? Who better to get some home burglary prevention tips from than a professional burglar?

Take a look at all of our Home Security Lighting. It is an inexpensive and effective way to protect your home from home burglary.

Join A Neighborhood Watch Group-Safety Tip Of The Week

The National Sheriffs Association started the neighborhood watch concept back in 1978. Today it is one of the leading crime prevention tools in the country. There are literally thousands of neighborhood watch groups in the United States. The idea is basically neighbors helping neighbors.

A Neighborhood Watch Group is easy to start. Just contact your local sheriff’s office or in some cases your local police department. One of them will have a community officer who can help get you going. They offer signage for your home or apartment complex and home security tips that are extremely valuable.

They offer great resources for single-family dwellings as well as apartment complexes. So no matter where you live there something in it for you. They keep you up-to-date on criminal activities going on in your community in the hopes that you can avoid them and as a result stay safer. Don’t delay start or join one today.

Who knows you might even get to know and like your neighbors.

Merry Christmas to all.

Home Burglary Spikes This Time Of Year

There was an article in the paper in Florida recently that talked about how at this time of year there’s a spike in break-ins of as much as 14 percent. Police are going door to door handing out flyers warning residents to be careful. You can read the whole story HERE.

“The most common way such burglaries are committed is with the so-called “knock and wait” method, Mandell said. That’s when someone dressed as a florist, magazine subscription seller or handyman rings the bell between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

If no one answers, the burglar will lift out rear sliding glass doors or go through an open bathroom window to enter a home. If a resident does answer, the burglar will pretend to have the wrong address and try the next unoccupied house.”

Don’t fall victim to a crime like home burglary. The easiest way to prevent it is to start locking all your doors and windows even when you are home.
