Nursing Homes: Elder Abuse On The Rise-One Way To Protect Your Parents

This will not come as a surprise to anybody but baby boomers are reaching retirement age so rapidly that supporting social programs cannot possibly keep up. A baby boomer reaches age 65 every 10 seconds. Seniors over the age of 65 will soon be a bigger proportion of the population than those under 65. That’s a scary statistic!

This also places stress on nursing homes and long-term care facilities with a double whammy. Not only is there a shortage of beds for the patients but there’s also a shortage of qualified staff to care for them. These shortages lead to all kinds of shortcuts and abuses. The home healthcare industry is booming as a result of those shortages. They don’t have enough people either so there are shortcuts in the hiring process there also.

Elder abuse can be manifested in many ways-from the withholding of necessary medications to verbal and physical abuse. Even psychological abuse is present. A study not long ago showed that 60% of all nursing homes had some kind of elder abuse and that 90% of all healthcare facilities employed a convicted felon-some even more than one.

And that kind of abuse happens in regulated industries of nursing homes. Can you imagine what goes on in home healthcare?

Alzheimer patients or dementia patients may be unable to verbalize what is going on in either their care facility or at home. That leads people to believe that they can get away with just about anything. That’s why some states have legalized the use of hidden cameras and spy cameras in long-term care facilities and nursing homes. Texas was the first. That way the adult children of patients can keep an eye on what’s going on. And to be honest, it’s about the only way that elder abuse can be caught.

Hidden cameras or spy cameras are hidden inside objects that are very common and will fit into just about any setting so no one would suspect they are being recorded. As you can see Covert Spy Cameras can look like just about anything you can imagine. The most effective ones have DVR’s built right in and use an SD card to record color images for easy recording and playback.

Almost all of the hidden cameras and spy cameras feature motion activated recording to eliminate dead recording time. This allows you to get longer effective recording times.

A hidden camera or spy camera is one way, maybe the only way, to protect your parents from elder abuse.

Elder Abuse Caught On Hidden Camera

In April and May of 2011 a caregiver in a nursing home was caught mistreating a patient not once but twice. It was caught with a hidden camera that was placed inside an air purifier. Elder abuse is very common in nursing homes unfortunately. You can read the whole story HERE.

The story brings to attention the many and varied uses of hidden cameras and the value that they have. Catching elder abuse in a nursing home or home healthcare situation is just one use. Businesses use them to catch employees stealing. Homeowners use them to catch burglars breaking into their homes. Parents use them to catch babysitters or nannies mistreating their small children. Spouses use them to catch their partners cheating on them.

I guess when you get right down to it, it doesn’t matter how you use your Spy Camera. The ones I like the most are the Self-contained Cameras that have a DVR inside them. They make recording and playback a snap. So easy I can do it.

Feedback on these posts is appreciated. Have your parents been victims of elder abuse? Please share your experience. We want to hear your thoughts.

Elder Care: Elder Abuse-What It Is And How To Catch It

Maybe you’ve seen the statistics lately indicating that a baby boomer reaches retirement age every ten seconds. Those over 65 years of age will soon outnumber the less than 65 age group. These statistics give an indication of the pressure that is put on Social Security and on nursing homes, long-term care facilities and other facilities needed to take care of seniors in their final days.

And it isn’t just the facilities that are in short supply. There is a shortage of nurses, nursing assistants and other healthcare workers who work in this specialized field.

The shortage is so bad for qualified personnel that a recent study showed that 90% of healthcare facilities had at least one convicted felon. Schools that train nursing personnel are booming in enrollment. There was an ad the other day that touted you can get a nursing certificate in as little as two weeks.

The point is, with the increased demand that seniors are putting on the system, the system is not doing a good job at keeping up in terms of facilities and personnel to care for them.

This leads to all kinds of elder abuse which can be manifested in physical, verbal and even psychological ways. A congressional study revealed that 60% of nursing homes had some kind of elder abuse. Many people are turning to alternatives to nursing homes and long-term care facilities such as home healthcare.

There is an absolute boom in home healthcare for senior citizens. That takes care of one of the problems-the facility-but not the other of qualified staff. If you use this alternative, you have to be especially careful because the person that is going to be taking care of your mom or dad in their house or yours is essentially a complete stranger. The vetting of personnel often goes by the wayside, which leaves the hiring of unqualified personnel with questionable backgrounds. This only exacerbates the problem of elder abuse.

So what can you do to help prevent or catch elder abuse? If you suspect it is happening with your parents, a hidden camera inside their room either in a nursing home, long-term care facility or especially in a home healthcare situation is a very viable solution. A hidden camera can be inside any common object that people are used to seeing in a home, office or business situation.

One of the most effective is the Projection Display Clock. It has a built-in DVR that records to an SD card. No one would ever suspect that an AM/FM radio is recording everything that’s going on with the motion activation feature. It is just one example of many of the hidden cameras that can be used to document elder abuse.

It provides another set of eyes on a very sensitive issue. You can’t be there all the time, so a hidden camera can provide documentation in an elder abuse situation or help document wrongdoing on the part of the home health caregiver.

Texas was the first state that authorized the use of a hidden camera to help catch and prevent elder abuse.

Be proactive in protecting your parents from elder abuse. A hidden camera is the best way to document an otherwise difficult crime to prove.

Elder Care-Choosing The Right Care For Aging Parents Isn’t Enough

You have probably seen the astonishing statistics-they’re pretty hard to miss. Even if you don’t follow the news, Social Security recipients are already drawing more money that is being put into the system. The ramifications of that are huge. Among other things it means that the system could at some point go broke. A baby boomer reaches retirement age every 10 seconds. Within the next decade seniors over the age of 65 will outnumber those under 65.

It also means that more people are retiring every day than our retirement systems can handle and that includes nursing homes and elder care of all kinds. The fact is that even though people have seen this coming for a long time, there is still a shortage of long-term care facilities like nursing homes and just as importantly a shortage of healthcare workers to take care of our elders.

The choices for elder care are pretty straightforward. You have nursing homes or other long-term care facilities with considerable nursing services required, assisted living facilities with not quite as much nursing required and stay-at-home healthcare.

There is another alternative that is started to flourish called a group home or adult homes as they are called. These are basically private homes that rent out rooms to seniors with little or no regulation or supervision. They represent a little more than a moneymaking opportunity for the homeowner.

So aside from the shortage of beds in all these facilities to accommodate all the growing demand, there is a shortage of qualified staff. The shortage of qualified staff puts more pressure on the facility to hire people who may not be qualified. A recent study showed that nine out of ten elder care facilities have one or more convicted felons working for them.

And another study shows that elder abuse of some kind happens in six out of every 10 facilities.

Is it any wonder that elder abuse is a huge problem? In a recent study done in Maine on elder abuse, the results of the study showed that family members were taking financial advantage of their elders in close to one hundred percent of the cases.

If family members are that abusive you can imagine what convicted felons will do?

So as important as it is to choose the right facility for your elders in their remaining years, it is incumbent upon caring family members to monitor that care diligently. Whether your parents are in a long-term care facility of some kind or in a home healthcare setting, a Covert Spy Camera can help ease your mind and catch or prevent elder abuse for your folks.

It will give you another set of eyes to watch over mom and dad.

How To Prevent Elder Abuse In An Elder Care Facility

We are all going to be faced with a decision of how to care for our aging parents. Elder care is just a fact of life. Within the next decade it is estimated that more people will be over the age of 65 than under age 65. And with that burgeoning number of elders growing strains will be placed on resources to care for the elderly.

Retirement homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and even home healthcare are faced with one or both of these problems: there is a shortage of qualified personnel to care for the elderly and there’s a shortage of beds in commercial facilities.

This leads to at least two problems. The shortage of beds in commercial facilities drives up the cost of nursing home care. And believe it or not that may be the least of your worries. The shortage of qualified people to work in these facilities has led to an increase in elder abuse.

The best way to keep an eye on mom and dad in any of these settings whether it’s a retirement home, nursing home, assisted-living facility or even in a home healthcare situation is with a Covert Spy Camera. There are many kinds available. The best one is the one with the DVR hidden inside it. They record to an SD card to make viewing very easy.

They come disguised as a variety of products so no one will really know that they’re being watched. It is the best way to catch and prevent elder abuse.
