Frontiersman Bear Spray-Product Review

click for more details

Frontiersman bear spray is 9.2 ounces of the most powerful bear spray allowed by the EPA. It contains 2% Capsaicin and Related Capsaicinoids (CRC). That is nearly 50% more than most pepper sprays for humans. But that is not the best part of this bear spray. For anyone who has been victim of a bear attack you know how rapidly they can move. They may look like a lumbering oafs, but are surprisingly fleet of foot. They can cover 25 feet in a heartbeat. That is the range of most normal bear sprays like Guard Alaska and Mace brand.

But Frontiersman Bear Spray has a range of 35 feet which can make a huge difference in a bear encounter. The new dual propellant system empties the can in just 5 seconds-another great feature. A lot of bear encounters happen at night so the new glow-in-the-dark can is helpful in finding that bear spray in dark conditions.

This new bear spray has been field tested under the some of the most rigorous conditions set Elmendorf Air Force Base up in Alaska where bears are more common than dogs.

Best Bear Spray Technique-Safety Tip Of The Week

Click for more details

As promised last week here are some tips on the proper use of bear spray.

Bear spray has to have a minimum of approximately 9 ounces its’ canister to be considered a bear spray. The reason for that is simple-a 4 ounce canister of normal spray will not work you need a lot of spray. And it should have a very good range. Most pepper sprays have a range of up to 12 sometimes even 18 feet. Bear sprays have a range of 20 and one even 35 feet.

Believe it or not bears are not normally aggressive. They do get aggressive after they come out of hibernation in the spring and before they can go into hibernation in the fall-so specifically when they’re looking for food.

If you do see a bear in the back country or anywhere for that matter don’t try and run away from it. Despite their lumbering appearance bears can move very quickly. At the first sight of a bear grab your bear spray from your backpack or holster. Always make sure it’s handy especially in the back country.

Bears like a lot of animals have a very sensitive nose and that is why bear pepper spray is so effective.

The basic idea here is to create a wall of mist of the spray between you and the bear. So at the first sight of a bear, spray in a circular motion aiming at the bear. You want the bear to walk into the wall of mist that you’ve created with the bear spray. When he smells that mist he will retreat. A bear can cover a distance of 30 feet in the blink of an eye.

Always make sure you have bear spray with you. We carry two brands. They both do exactly the same thing but have slightly different capabilities

Guard Alaska can spray up to 15 to 20 feet away and Mace Brand bear spray can spray up to 35 feet away.

Bears Are Coming And They Are Hungry-Safety Tip Of The Week

Click for more details

It is almost that time of year when bears are finished hibernating. In another couple weeks when that happens they will come out of their winter habitat and boy oh boy are they hungry! Two times a year they get exceptionally aggressive; early spring as they come out of their hibernation, and early fall when they start their hibernation.

At these two times of year bears are looking for food. And when bears are looking for food you best not get in their way. Bears can smell food from great distances. So homeowners should take precautions and make sure that their trash is covered and if a grill is used outside that equipment is well protected because bears will go to any lengths to get at food when they’re hungry. They have been known to break in screen doors to get into homes.

That is why it’s a good idea for you to keep some bear spray around your house. We carry two brands. They both do exactly the same thing but have slightly different capabilities

Guard Alaska can spray up to 15 to 20 feet away and Mace Brand bear spray can spray up to 35 feet away.

And next week’s safety tip we will cover the proper way to use bear spray. Like anything else there is a good technique to get maximum effectiveness. We will share that next week!

Bear Sightings Up Nationwide-Steps You Can Take To Protect Yourself And Your Family

Maybe you saw the story on the news last week that bear sightings were up nationwide. You can read the whole story RIGHT HERE in case you missed it.

The story was very interesting in itself on a lot of different levels but basically it talked about how bears are becoming much more comfortable going into neighborhoods because people have been feeding them, so their fear level is greatly diminished.

Bears are normally not aggressive except when they’re looking for food. Then they can be extremely aggressive and are very dangerous. And despite the fact that they look like they’re lumbering oafs they can move very quickly and have razor sharp claws that can rip you apart in seconds. A small bear is still 300 to 400 pounds-big enough to break into your house if it smells food.

They stock up on food before and after hibernation. Springtime and fall are the two times a year that bears are looking for food. Here are some steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.

If you love to cook out the smells from the grill can attract a bear from miles away. Put your grill in a secured area like a garage after you are done cooking.

If you feed your pets outdoors, don’t leave the food out there after they’re done eating.

If your trash is outdoors put it in a secured container.

Have a canister of Guard Alaska Bear Spray around your house in case of bear encroaches into your property or, heaven forbid, it gets in your house. It has a range of 15-20 feet.

If you travel into the back country for walking, hiking, cycling or jogging whatever you do carry some Mace Bear Pepper Spray with you. It has a range of 35 feet.

Follow these tips and you will not be a victim of bear attack and you and your family it will be much safer.

Every year, millions of Americans take to the back country for camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, and off-road biking, walking or just having fun. Aside from getting lost in the back country the biggest threat to many of them will be running into a bear.

Bears are not the cute little cuddly things you see in cartoons. They are big, lumbering oafs that are surprisingly fleet of foot and have claws that can rip you apart in a split-second. This may fall in the category of “it will never happen to me” but just to put you on the safe side here are some bear pepper spray tips for you to be aware of.

2. Carry it in a holster on your belt for easy access. When you need it you new need it right away.

3. Don’t spray it directly at the bear, but rather create a wall of mist between you and the bear so when the bear charges at you it will run into the spray.

4. Don’t run away from the bear after you use the pepper spray back up slowly and make your exit.

5. And guns have been shown to be less effective against bears than bear pepper spray.

Guard Alaska Bear Spray has a range of up to 20 feet.

Bear Attacks-Are Guns Or Pepper Spray More Effective In Self Defense?

On 16, August 2011, an article appeared in the Alaska Dispatch newspaper on a grizzly bear attacking seven teenagers in late July. They were in their fourth week of a Wilderness Backpacking Course sponsored by the National Outdoor Leadership School.

The article prompted huge response from people on whether or not the teenagers should have been armed for their backpacking course. They were not. Over 2000 people responded to the article on both sides of the issue.

Proponents of firearms claim you should never go into the back country, especially in Alaska, without a high-powered firearm.

Opponents point out that an aggressive grizzly bear is not necessarily deterred by a little pain caused by a shotgun or a bullet. They added that bites, blows and scratches from two thousand pound grizzly bears are much more deadly than a lead pellet. A bear, even a fatally wounded bear, and still run 30 miles an hour and has been known to attack and kill the shooter.

Bear Pepper Spray continues to be the preferred self defense in bear country. Properly used, bear spray is much more effective than a handgun or rifle.

What Is The Best Self Defense Product?

You probably have heard of self-defense products by now. They are a nonlethal alternative to the deadly force of a handgun. They disable an assailant for as long as 45 min. giving you time to escape a dangerous situation to seek help if you wish or just to get away.

Self defense products have been used literally for thousands of years ever since Chinese threw bags of hot spices at their enemies. The stun gun has origins going back to the 1930s when a cattle prod was first invented.

The stun gun and pepper sprays are the two most commonly used self defense products. Law enforcement officials and the military both use self defense products. Postal carriers carry Pepper Sprays as a defense against dog attacks. Hikers, campers and outdoors men use bear pepper spray as a defense against bear attacks mountain lion attacks and as a first line of defense against other animal attacks in the wild.

Even security guards use self defense products in the performance of their duties. So the question is what is the best self defense product? And the answer is…..ta da the one that you carry is the best self defense product and affords you the only line of self defense in an assault situation whether from a dog or human. Otherwise, you’re in deep trouble.

Check out all our Self Defense Products.

Defending Against Animal Attacks-Five Of The Best Tools

Animal attacks are one of the most common problems in the United States today. If you don’t believe me check on the cable channels and see how many shows are about animal attacks. People love to watch them, but if you are a victim of one it’s not so much fun. An attack by a dog can be one of the most frightening things that you can go through. Out West there’s a potential for bear attacks, mountain lion attacks and other wild animal attacks too.

Every year over 500,000 of our fellow Americans get attacked by dogs. And those are the ones we know about. Of those nearly 1,000,000 require hospitalization.

Here are five of the best animal repellers for you to consider. They are all very effective and very inexpensive. There are slight differences between them.

All animals have extremely sensitive noses so pepper spray is one of the best animal repellent’s that you can use.

1. Of course everybody has heard of bear spray. I always recommend that nobody be allowed into the back country for camping, fishing, hiking without carrying some bear pepper spray. In studies done, it has been shown to be more effective than a handgun at defending against a bear attack. As a bear approaches create a wall of mist between you and the bear so that when he enters that area he will smell the pepper spray and retreat.

2. The muzzle dog pepper spray contains 20 half-second bursts that are good up to as much as12 feet away. It has a flip top safety to prevent accidental discharge and includes a Velcro attachment you can use to secure it to a bike. This version of pepper spray is specially formulated for dogs with less than 1% concentration of oleoresin capsicum-the usual concentration is 10%.

3. The ultrasonic dog repeller makes a discomforting but not harmful high frequency sound that only dogs can hear. It is good up to 20 feet away and uses a 9 volt battery. It is good for dogs, cats, coyotes and wolves. You can use this device as a training tool for your dogs or cats so they don’t mess up your furniture or dig through your trash can. It can help teach good behavior. Another model has a strobe light which is helpful to you and distracting to dogs.

4. A new personal favorite of many is the Scram Patrol with laser. It works up to 20 feet away and is good for cats, dogs, squirrels, coyotes, wolves and all other nuisance animals. It produces a high-frequency sound that is not harmful, but very effective at repelling animals up to 20 feet away. It is inaudible to humans. It works on deer as well for those of you who have deer in their yard

5. And maybe one of the most unique products is an inaudible (to humans) ultrasound device that attaches to your car. The Deer Whistle Warning Device alerts deer, dogs, bear, elk, skunks, cats, squirrels or anything that’s out on the highway in your way. As you drive, the sound reverberates warning them away. It is wind activated and is good up to a quarter of a mile away.

Those are five of the best animal repellers to help you defend against animal attacks.

The Home Security Superstore is one of the oldest and largest independent distributors of high quality home security, surveillance, spy, self-defense, survival and safety products. We carry a wide range of self-defense products including Tasers, stun guns, pepper sprays and other non-lethal weapons that can save your life in the event of an attack.

Bear Pepper Spray-What You Need To Know

It is that time of year again when Americans by the millions will be heading to the high country for camping, hiking and fishing activities. Much has been written about bears and bear pepper spray and how to defend against bear attacks. Some of it to be honest is a little bit confusing. Here’s some information about bear attacks and what you need to know.

Bears are naturally curious animals, but are not normally aggressive. They get a little bit more aggressive when they’re hungry. Some people say they’re hungry all the time and that may be more true than not. But in the fall before they hibernate and in the spring time when they come out of hibernation they can be particularly hungry and particularly aggressive.

Up in the high country where they live the condition of their natural habitat determines to some extent how hungry they are and how aggressive they are. So for example if it’s particularly dry and much of their natural food is nonexistent they may turn more aggressively towards other sources of food at lower elevations and campgrounds.

If you see a bear and a bear sees you at the same time the best thing you can do is speak softly to the bear, never turn your back and back away slowly. Never run away from a bear.

If a bear sees you and starts advancing towards you try to make yourself appear as large as you can. That may startle the bear and scare him away. If it doesn’t scare him away curl up in a ball and offer no resistance.

Many people think that a handgun is effective against bears. The fact of the matter is in studies done by fish and wildlife experts show that if you are attacked by a bear and use bear pepper spray chances are 90% in your favor that you will win that battle.

I would never recommend going into the back country without an EPA approved bear pepper spray. Always look for the EPA’s seal of approval on a can of bear spray and only use sprays that are designated as bear pepper sprays. That indicates a minimum amount of spray in the canister usually at least 230 grams and a minimal amount of OC (oleoresin capsicum) which is the main ingredient in all pepper sprays. Bear Pepper Spray has a range of 35 feet and is EPA approved.

The other problem that people have is they don’t know how to use it. First of all, always carry it in a hip holster so it is readily available. When the bear is about 40 feet away and is advancing towards you start creating a wall of mist with the spray so when the bear advances into it he will smell it with his extremely sensitive nostrils and be repulsed by it.

Bear pepper spray is the most effective deterrent against bear attacks. Never go into the back country without it, especially when you’re fishing, camping or hiking.
